Men`s Softball Rules and Regulations

The slow-pitched softball gets its name from the fact that pitchers have to put a 6-foot bow on their pitches to slow down the speed of incoming pitches. The Amateur Softball Association of America is the governing body for softball in the United States and sets the rules for most recreational leagues and all Olympic leagues. For men`s slow-pitch softball, the ASA has added a variety of rules to allow for fair and faster play. For a slow playing field played with a 12-inch ball, the bases should be spaced 65 feet apart. The launcher platform must be 50 feet from the home plate. The minimum fence distance is 300 feet, with a maximum of 315 feet. For the men`s 16-inch slow throw, the bases are spaced 60 feet apart, the pitcher`s rubber is 38 feet from the original plate, and the fence spacing is 250 feet minimum with no maximum. For Masters, Seniors, 40-OSP and 45-OSP Men`s Slow Pitch Masters, hitters can use a courtesy runner when they reach base. A courtesy runner does not replace the basic runner on defense.

Courtesy runners must appear on the alignment card of the game being played, and teams must report a courtesy runner when entering the game. During Masters and Senior matches, teams can use an unlimited number of free runners per round, with only one runner per round allowed in Master 40 OSP and 45 OSP games. The rules are the same as the regular softball rules, except that there is no need to run the basics after a home run over the fence in the major men`s slow-pitch divisions. To avoid losing balls and game delays, the ASA limits the number of home runs hit during men`s regular games and slow-pitch games. Once a team reaches its limit, any balls that are knocked over the fence from that point count as exits, and core runners are not allowed to advance. Limits vary depending on the type or class of league within these two divisions. Balls used for a 12-inch slow throw must have a circumference of 12 inches, a coefficient of restitution of 0.440 or less and a compression of 375.0 or less. The ball may have a white or optically yellow cover. A 16-inch bullet must have a circumference of 16 inches, weigh 9 ounces, have a coefficient of restitution of 0.470 or less, and a compression of 375.0 or less.

The ball must have a white cover. NOTE: In case of rain, check the cancellation of the game at the campus recreation office around 3:00 pm (PEC 214A, ext. 3742). The decision to postpone a match due to weather conditions will be made before 15:00 on the day in question. Theft from a base is illegal in the master and higher departments. A player cannot start an interception until the pitch has reached the front of the home plate or when the pitcher has the ball but is not near the pitcher`s mound.
